Why was my bonus taxed so much?
Short answer
Bonuses are usually withheld at the IRS supplemental rate of 22% federal (37% over $1M), plus FICA, state, and local. The withholding rate is not your final tax rate — your true liability is settled when you file.
How to figure out which cause is yours
- Find a recent paycheck where this looked normal.
- Compare the two stubs line by line. The Paycheck Comparison tool does this for you.
- Identify the line(s) that changed — that is almost always the answer.
- Use the Ask Payroll Generator to send a polite question.
